A Biology Program that Makes Learning Easy and Fun!Dr. Sheldon Margulies is tailoring a biology program that flips the teaching process. Instead of using illustrations to explain written material, he begins with illustrations and uses engaging narration to explain the illustrations. The appeal of this program is that students are not forced to digest material from a textbook. Instead, using two senses – vision and hearing – students are able to rapidly grasp the concepts displayed in the illustrations.

Dr. Sheldon Margulies is a member of the American Academy of Neurology. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966, and Stanford School of Medicine in 1971, completed an internal medicine residency at McGill University in 1973, and completed a neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1976. Dr. Margulies is a board-certified neurologist in private practice and Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology at Howard University Hospital and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, as well as an internist and attorney. In his 35 year career as a neu¬rologist, Dr. Margulies has taught over 2500 medical students and neurology residents and authored three textbooks explaining how the body and the brain work, how doctors arrive at a diagnosis from the patient’s signs and symptoms, and how attorneys logically approach every legal case.
Paul Alvaran, a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park, is an accomplished musician and owner of Sound Force Studios and Sound Force Consulting. Having recorded over 1,000 young musical artists with various record labels, Mr. Alvaran understands the depth of young people’s devotion to music, song, and culture– and is now using that understanding to motivate students to accomplish academic goals.

The MILEstone Program takes complicated subjects and explains them in terms students can understand. Dr. Margulies uses simple PowerPoint slides to complement subject material. Each slide is accompanied by an attached audio file that brings clarity to the content of each slide. Students can view the program using various media tools such as iPod, Treo, or home computer away from the classroom. Sound Force Consulting uses musical software as a motivational tool, allowing the students to creatively express what they have learned. Developed by a neurologist who understands the neurophysiology of learning. The MILEstone Program assumes the student has no knowledge of biology, making it easily adaptable to most students. The MILEstone Program is a self-contained curriculum that requires no teacher. It proceeds in a simple easy-to-learn approach, with each step built on the preceding material. During each lesson students are presented a series of questions to ensure engagement in the learning process. These questions do not simply ask for the material to be recycled. Rather, many of the questions present a novel situation requiring the student to use what was learned. The MILEstone Program is a curriculum that goes beyond explaining what happens. Every lesson asks “why does this happen?” Education should be more than teaching facts. It should teach students how to ask questions, and how to find the answers. You Can Help Fund the Initiative
